Hello, My name is Eric. I will be moving to Campbell soon, and I am a little nervous about it. Can anyone tell me what there is to do there. Is it a walkable town? Is there good public transit? I am a vegetarian. Are there natural food markets or vegetarian restaurants? Any suggestions or advice would be very appreciated. Thanks

Vegetarian: Royal Taj Indian for giant take-out portions. There was also an Ethiopian place in downtown a couple of years ago, but it may be gone now. But better to go to downtown San Jose where there's numerous totally vegetarian restuarants, as well as Indian, Ethiopian, etc. Or Sunnyvale for South Indian.

Natural foods: There is a Whole Foods and a farmers' market.

Walkable: not really. Bikable, definitely. Public transit is barely adequate. The South Bay developed from farm towns into cities only since the 1950's or so, and the development pattern is late-20th-century suburban. There's now some effort to make it more urban, but we don't have the infrastructure or centralized layout of older cities (Oakland, San Francisco) that went through a streetcar-dominated phase in earlier times.

But why are you nervous? Does Campbell have some kind of reputation as a dangerous high-crime city? Or are you more worried about being bored to death?

And just out of curiosity, if you know nothing about our area, why did you already decide to move to Campbell instead of San Jose, Sunnyvale, Saratoga, or Cupertino?

Hope this helps.

I am more worried about being bored to death. I have lived in Portland for so long and really like the creature comforts it provides me. As far as choosing Campbell, a friend of mine who has lived there before suggested it. He believed that it would be a good place for me because of the kinds of retail it offers and it's proximity to light rail. If you have other suggestions I would welcome those. Thanks for replying to my message

At one time, there was open space between Campbell and San José. Campbell was called "The Orchard City." Now it is part of a paved-over megalopolis. Campbell is spread out into many different neighborhoods. The original city core, downtown, is quite compact and still has a small-town feel. The VTA light rail runs right through the center of that area. Nearby is the Pruneyard Shopping Center at Bascom and Campbell Avenues — high rises, multi-screen theaters, etc. VTA (Valley Transportation Authority) buses run on all the major thoroughfares like Bascom Ave., Winchester Blvd., etc. Parts of Campbell are walkable, e.g., downtown. Downtown has a few stores, several coffee houses and cafes, nightclubs, restaurants, the library, light rail station, etc. To see all of Campbell, you need a bicycle or a car. I don't know of any vegetarian restaurants per se, but most Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese restaurants have vegetarian items on the menu.Welcome to Santa Clara County!
