ANTHONY MARENNA ON DC METBLOGS & THEREBUTTAL

Goodbye For Now Friends - We Will Meet Again

When I signed on as City Captain of Metblogs back in September, it had been very recently decimated by the exodus of the previous Metblogs team. Readership had plummeted to almost nothing and less than two articles were being published each week. It has been a pleasure since then getting to know the current team [...]

A Few Comments On The Inaugural Concert

Some of you may have noticed that my V-log of the Inaugural Concert never finished. As planned a large group of people (probably 20 of us) arrived at 19th & Constitution at about 5:30am. By that time about 200-300 people were in line, all of whom seemed to be fresh off the party. We waited [...]

Former Nats Pitcher John Patterson Retires

John Patterson has been hammered with arm injuries over the past couple of years. He has finally reached a point of such frustration that he chose to announce his retirement at the too-young age of 30. MLB.com commenter flannys sums up my feelings on the matter well:

LOVING LIFE IN OUR NATION'S CAPITOL

I am a business development consultant for Beareo Enterprises, LLC. There I oversee operations in the DC Metropolitan area and market the Bank On Obama product. In addition, I am a MLB Video Logger for the Washington Nationals.

In the past I have done work as a Public Policy Advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and have conducted operations in conjunction with the Governor's Prevention Partnership and the Connecticut Liquor Control Division.

Here at Metblogs I'm the former City Captain for the Washington DC site, where I blogged locally and basically had a good time. I will return someday.

Oh, and I live only a few blocks from this:

Your homeless shelter woes is all over the country. In my little corner of LA the developers got the city to rewrite the general plan. Suddenly a church with an 80 year history as being a source of aid for the homeless was sitting in a newly rezoned high-density residential sector. A developer decided he wanted to build on that lot.

The city pays the visit. Tells them "your helping the homeless is a public nuisance. If you don't stop we'll have neighbors complain and then close you down as a 'nuisance' under the Safe Streets act. Then we'll eminent domain your property and new housing will go in".

The church stopped helping the homeless. Now the church is being told their Sunday services were disrupting the quiet of the neighborhood. That their congregation were clogging the streets when they parked. Same threat of ED now exists.

The real kicker to all of this is less than a block away is a bar that caters to the local gang bangers. We've had brawls that needed neighboring agencies to get them under control. We've had a murder in library park. There is constant graffiti and vandalism with gang tagging tracked back to the patrons of this bar. Nothing happens. Why? Sales tax revenue and oh, the owner and city manager are best friends.

Sadly the whole redevelopment agency idea has been bastardized and has become a way for developers to have their ventures underwritten on public funds. The real losers in the deal are the homeless as those that helped them are shut down for being an 'attractive nuisance".

Sorry for the rant, just wanted you to know the problem is rampant and no end in sight.
